On its start page L.I.SA. provides at a glance almost all the possibilities offered by the portal: write, edit, comment on and discuss articles; upload images, audio files and videos; communicate with scholars and researchers; and find wide-ranging information on selected key topics. One special offering is "L.I.S.A. video", where you’ll find professionally-produced science films.
The whole internet platform comprises three areas:
A Web log for holders of the foundation's doctoral scholarships: here young academics have the opportunity to prominently present their dissertation projects, swap information, and participate in and contribute to every area.
An editorially-managed section which contains extensive files on humanities topics, invokes specialist discussions, offers online lectures and expert chats and which creates a public for book reviews, exhibition criticism and event announcements.
Project videos from ongoing research for selected scientific projects. Eight teams of scientists participating in a Foundation-sponsored research project have filmed their research work. These "film diaries" have been professionally edited and are published as episodes on “L.I.SA. video”.
How do I log on to L.I.SA.?
Log-on follows customary practice on the internet. The first step is one-time registration at L.I.SA. To do this click on "Register", and an e-mail window opens automatically. Send the e-mail. Within 24 hours you’ll receive a reply from the editor with your access data - user name and password. You can then register for the first time on the portal under "log in".
You can see that you’re now in a logged-in area from (among other things) the different colour of the portal – sandy beige for the logged-in area visible to members only, lime green for the logged out area visible to all internet users.
How do I change my password?
We recommend that you change your automatically generated password after you log in for the first time. Proceed as follows:
-> My profile (right-hand bar)
-> Edit business card (business card opens in the middle area)
-> Edit (input screen "Edit profile" opens)
-> Change password
-> Send
You can now log on immediately with your new password.
How do I create my profile and business card?
Here you can personalise your basic entry:
-> My profile (right-hand bar)
-> Edit business card (business card opens in the middle area)
Different options are now available:
-> Edit profile: here you can provide further information about yourself, such as your C.V., further links or tags with which you’d like to be associated.
-> Scientific profile: here you can present your scientific work, giving your key research areas, current projects or publications.
-> Privacy: here you can decide what information on your profile should be generally accessible on the internet outside the members' area. Unselected areas are open only to members.
-> Upload photo
How do I find things on the L.I.SA. start page?
The portal is divided into four visual areas:
-> Top: here you can click directly on the individual project videos.
-> Centre: this is the core area of the portal. In the top bar you have access to L.I.SA.’s four main headings: "Current articles", "L.I.SA. video", "Dossiers" and "Authors' network". Here are listed chronologically all the articles you are able to study or comment on. A "topic filter" makes it easier for you to search for particular entries.
-> Right: here you can write, comment, adapt and edit articles and also edit your profile. The "Search" input field offers a full text search throughout the whole portal. Further categories tell you about comments, symposia, exhibitions, reviews etc.
-> Left: Tools for navigating around the blog, for example Tag Cloud, article filter and archive.
What are Preview and Edit mode?
In the logged-in area you have two options available: preview and edit mode. At the top of the right hand bar is the mode to which you can switch. If for example this shows "Edit mode", this means that you are currently in preview mode, and vice versa.
Edit mode is the area in which you set-up, edit or delete articles. The corresponding functions appear in the top right-hand bar (-> New article, adapt article -> My profile > My article)
When you switch to preview mode, all articles appear as they will for all other users.
How do I create an article?
In the right-hand bar you will find the corresponding function:
-> Switch to "Edit mode"
-> Produce new article (a window with a choice of article type opens)
-> Select article type (input screen "Add article" opens)
-> Fill-in the screen
-> Send
Your article appears immediately under the heading you selected and is automatically the latest article on the portal.
How do I publish an article?
You can decide whether your article should appear only in the members' area/protected area (beige portal) or should also be accessible on the web to the general internet public (lime green portal).
In the input screen "Add article" (->right bar -> "Create new article", select article type), at the end you will find a question asking whether your article should be visible only to registered users of the L.I.SA. portal. Click on the question and your text, image, video or audio file will appear only in the members' area. If you do not click this question, the editors will make your article available to everyone on the general web.
How do I find an article?
You have a number of search and filter options available:
1. "Search": the input field offers you the options of a full text search. Here you can enter any term, and all articles then appear in which are found the search term you entered. Entries which contain the term in the title appear first in the results list. You also have the option of entering parts of words.
2. "Topic filter": here you can call up all articles which are allocated to a particular category. The available categories are pre-set. The number in brackets shows the number of articles in the corresponding categories. After selecting a category the corresponding articles appear in chronological order.
3. "My articles": here you can call up all the articles you have produced in chronological order. The function also distinguishes between the publication status (public/private) of articles.
4. "Articles": here all articles of the portal can be sorted by qualitative criteria. You can select between the latest, most read or most commented articles. The result appears in chronological order.
5. "Older articles": here you can search by the month in which the articles appeared.
6. "Tags": The Tag Cloud contains the most commonly used tags. The size of the text indicates how frequently a tag is used.
7. "Authors' network / Members": here you can search for articles from particular members of the portal.
How do I comment on an article?
After each article a "Comment" link appears. Clicking once opens a "Comment" window in which you can write or edit your text. After you have sent the comment, it appears below the commented article with your name and the date and time.
Your comment also appears in the right hand bar. There you can scroll through the most recent comments and read all further comments.
How do I upload an image, audio or video file?
You have the option of submitting various files (images, audio files and videos) as stand-alone articles or adding these to other forms of article (article, event, file etc.). In the input window you can choose between three options: "Upload image", "Upload audio file" and "Upload video file". Then click on the "Browse" field. A window opens showing your PC’s hard disk, from which you can select your file. Back in the L.I.SA. input window the path to your file appears.
You can also add an explanatory text to your file. Now send the input data.
Important! Please use only images, audio files and videos which are copyright-free or to which you have unrestricted rights (private photos, audio and videos). In the input window please therefore state the source of the media you are using. Further information on copyright is given in our General Terms and Conditions on the start page.
Uploaded media can be replaced or removed by you at any time.
How do I view a video?
There are several options for accessing project videos:
1. "Current articles": here you’ll find all submitted films listed in chronological order – project videos and also videos uploaded by users.
2. "L.I.S.A. video": here the eight project videos appear, each in ten episodes.
You can also access project videos directly from the start page without having to switch to other sections, either via the animated cover flow in the top bar or via the video window in the left-hand bar in which you can scroll through the individual films. Clicking on the top video bar takes you to the "L.I.SA. video" section, or alternatively you can start the film from the left-hand bar, when you will remain on the start page and can see other L.I.SA. offerings.
Under "Show episode" on the left-hand bar of the start page you switch to the "L.I.SA. video" section, in which you can start the film you’ve chosen. You will see an overview of all project videos under "Matrix of all project videos". Individual episodes of a project also appear there. By clicking on an episode you switch to the "L.I.SA. video" section from where you can start the films.
You have the choice of viewing a video in the form initially submitted or in full screen format. Click on the square in the bottom film bar to switch to full screen mode. Due to the resolution, in most cases the image becomes less clear. If you’d like to return to the original mode, click the square again or press the Escape (Esc) key.
Back in the original mode, under the heading "Project videos" in the left-hand bar you’ll find information on the film (producer, time, place etc.).
You can comment on project videos in the same way as on any other article.
What is L.I.S.A. Wiki?
L.I.SA. Wiki is an extra service provided for all L.I.SA. members for a common project. Here several users can jointly edit essays, symposium reports or reviews, in which several authors contribute an article.
