Freedom, sensuality and imagination – in the 19th century these were common Western notions of the Orient. As well as preoccupying archaeologists and historians, the fascination of the Orient and in particular of Egypt also cast its spell primarily on artists. Painters such as Wilhelm Gentz, Max Slevogt and Paul Klee set off for Egypt, wanting to catch the special light there and the country’s unique colours in their work. In a project sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, experts from the Dresden State Art Collections have looked into the reception of Egypt in the works of Max Slevogt and Paul Klee and, as of today, are presenting their results in a special exhibition.
