After the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in Chile in the 16th century, the Mapuche – unlike many other indigenous peoples of the Americas – managed to successfully prevent their subjugation for centuries. This required fierce and violent resistance. There is talk of systematic torture and even cannibalism. But in the anthropological studies of Carl Alexander Simon, there are no traces of this militant potential. Simon portrayed the Mapuche as children and trivialised them. In order to win over the Germans for his colonisation project, he had to present the new world as enticingly as possible. And in this world, the Mapuche were primarily intended as cheap labour.
