The international conference "New Mobilities and Evolving Identities: Islam, Youth and Gender in South and Southeast Asia" was jointly organized by the Department for Mediality and Intermediality in Asian and African Studies (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS, Freie Universität Berlin) and by the Cluster of Excellence Normative Orders (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt) and was held on the 20th and 21st of April 2012 at Humboldt-Universität and Freie Universität in Berlin. The thematic focus of this conference emerged from a preparatory workshop in April 2011, which was held at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, under the title "New Approaches to Gender and Islam: Translocal and local feminist networking in South and Southeast Asia". Twenty scholars from South Asia, Southeast Asia, North America and Europe presented and discussed their current research in four separate panels.
Meena Sharify-Funk (Waterloo, Ontario), author of "Encountering the Transnational: Women, Islam and the Politics of Interpretation” (2008), hold the keynote address.
