In the collections of the Institute of Archaeology and Cultural History of the Ancient Mediterranean at the University of Hamburg, Dr Nadine Leisner is examining plaster casts of ancient statues, mirrors, sarcophagi and other centuries-old objects as part of her research project "Myth in Motion". These objects are "walkable": the researcher can look at their backs, experience their materiality and thus recognise even the tiniest details. Two-dimensional images provide an insight into the world of Etruscan thought, but not into the context of the objects: Where did this vessel stand? Did this mirror have a usable handle or was it only used as a burial object? Was this urn only painted on the front or also on the back? These considerations help the archaeologist to better understand how the Etruscans dealt with Greek myths.
