In Late Antiquity, the island bishoprics of the Aegean were strategically located along the most important trade routes and shipping lanes between Constantinople – the centre of the Roman Empire – and Egypt, the most important supplier of grain to the Empire. The island bishoprics that emerged as a result of the spread of the Christian faith in the Aegean Sea quickly developed into significant economic players in the empire. The wealth they generated flowed into the building of churches as an expression of the new faith. Even on the smallest islands in the Aegean, Christian communities with imposing church buildings thus emerged. Today, close academic cooperation across political and disciplinary boundaries is needed to research the structure and functioning of the early Christian communities and their networks.
