Around midnight of 20 September, 2020 the Main Administration Building - also known as the "Ivory Tower" - of Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda caught fire, destroying a multitude of records as well as parts of the building itself. While the cause of the fire is unknown, what is known is that the destruction is a setback for one of Africa's oldest and most prestigious universities.
Professor Josephine Ahikire, principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), project partner to the Gerda Henkel Foundation through its Lisa Maskell Fellowship program, talks about the fire and this effects the university, CHUSS and what it could mean for Makerere going forward.
